Treasure o’ Tunes

There’s more to music than filmy stuff, says Musicman Mihir

At every party,on every occasion,or in any session of listening to music,it is film songs that take the lead, but Mihir Joshi has given years to—besides singing—compiling, playing and doing research on non-flim music of India and abroad.

“I remained associated with All India Radio’s FM channel Rainbow in Mumbai for five years, till there was no slot left for English songs and then I moved on to another channel Radio One,” said Joshi,in Lucknow on Wednesday. He introduces himself as ‘Musicman Mihir’. “Besides interviewing for radio topline singers from India and abroad,I have been associated with music company EMI. But gradually I shifted to anchoring musical nites for the likes of Kavita Seth (of Goonja sa hai koi iktaara-fame),Shibani Kashyap (Zinda) and doing some singing myself.

“In December 2009,I launched the website musicmanmihir.in,on which I have uploaded my web-shows comprising music of any and every genre,be it pop, rock, jazz, blues,or classical-semi-classical and in various languages. In the 99th show, you will get to see and hear Pakistani artistes Javed Shabbir,Zeb and Haniya singing songs that are brilliant but largely unheard in our country,” says Joshi, who is quite upbeat about the 100th show that he has anchored with friend Luke Kenny, model and actor. “I bond with Luke over music, big time,” he gushes. “He has an amazing knowledge of the various genres of music and we have discussed all our favourite numbers, albums and artistes who have featured in the previous 99 shows.” There is no issue of copyright here, says Joshi,as he uploads all music through Youtube.

“Besides,I am not charging anything from anyone, from neither the artistes, nor the visitors to the site,” he says, adding that major music companies,EMI,Universal and Sony are giving him a lot of support in the cause.

The site opens up to patrons a treasure of music of artistes from Frank Sinatra and Elvis Presley to present-day pop singers from India and Pakistan.

“The portal is a platform for artistes who are either upcoming or not quite widely heard. On the other hand, the ardent music afficianados have an opportunity to check out the best and latest of songs being sung anywhere on the subcontinent or in other parts of the world too.” He has played all the songs on radio or Internet and has even sung many of them in concerts, but in the middle of the IPL season he was inspired to pen, compose and sing a tribute to the Mumbai Indians. “It is my debut as a singer and by the end of the year I hope to cut an album,” he hopes.
