For the first time,the Azamgarh police has been asked to coordinate with the Anti-Terror Squad (ATS) to trace the whereabouts of the eight Indian Mujahideen operatives from the district who are wanted by the Delhi police.
The list includes Ariz Khan alias Junaid,Shahzad Ahmed alias Pappu,Mohammad Sajid,Mirza Shadab Beig,Mohammad Khalid,Dr Shahnawaj,Asadullah Akhtar and Salman.
All eight were allegedly involved in the serial blasts in Delhi,Mumbai,Jaipur,Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh. Each of them carry a reward of Rs 1 lakh on their head.
On Wednesday,a meeting on the issue was held at the DGP Headquarters,where senior officers discussed the matter with the ATS officers and the Azamgarh police.
KK Tripathi,the Deputy Inspector General of Azamgarh Range,said: I did not attend the meeting. So far,the Azamgarh police was not involved in the intelligence collection of the terror accused on the run.
We have been extending our support to the police teams visiting from Delhi,Mumbai or other states in search of the accused, said Tripathi.
According to police sources,the ATS and the Azamgarh police were asked to come up with complete details of the terror accused.
The district police chief has been asked to involve the police station in-charges to collect information about the day-to-day activities of the accused.
The SP has also been asked to form a team which can work at a short notice.
The alleged IM members from Azamgarh arrested so far include Sadiq Sheikh,Zakir Sheikh,Mohammad Saif,Zeeshan Ahmed,Mohammad Shakeel,Zia-ur-Rehman,Saquib Nisar,Saif-ur-Rehman Ansari,Sarwar and Hakim.
