The ITF title has boosted my confidence: Sharmada

Talented Indian youngster Sharmada Balu feels that winning her first ITF Women’s Futures tennis title has boosted her confidence to a great extent.

Talented Indian youngster Sharmada Balu feels that winning her first ITF Women’s Futures tennis title has boosted her confidence to a great extent. Sharmada registered a 6-3,2-6,6-2 victory against Yvonne Neuwirth of Austria in the singles final at Oudh Gymkhana Club,Lucknow on Saturday. While Balu was seeded fifth in the tournament,Neuwirth was not a seeded player.

Talking to The Indian Express Sharmada said,“This was the first time I was playing on grass courts so it had been tough for me. I had to continue to play well in all the matches. I was expecting a keenly contested match and I am happy to win my first ITF women’s futures title.”

The seventeen-year-old said that though Friday’s semi-final victory of 6-2,6-2 against fourth seed Celine Cattaneo,who was the winner of the Delhi leg of the tournament,had instilled confidence in her,however,somewhere she had at the back of her mind that the final was not going to be that easy.

She said that the win at Lucknow had boosted her morale and she would be approaching to the tournaments ahead with a greater zeal. “This year’s calendar is very impressive. A number of tournaments are lined up. I am India no.2 at the under-18 category and was no-6 in the women’s section during the tournament. I want to win many more tournaments to improve my ranking.”
