Tension prevailed in Old City area of Lucknow on Saturday after a monkey was shot at by a local resident in the morning,following which people belonging to a community protested against the incident. Police and Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) forces had to be deployed to control them.
According to police,Abdal Ahmed shot at a monkey in the leg with his licensed revolver as it had arrived on his rooftop and was scaring his children at around 7 am.
Soon after,rumour spread in the area that the monkey had been shot dead,police said. A group of people gathered there to protest against the incident. They demanded that Ahmed be arrested and his licence be seized immediately.
Sarvesh Kumar Mishra,Circle Officer (Chowk),said teams of Lucknow Municipal Corporation and Forest Department had to struggle for more than two hours to catch the injured monkey that has now been sent to Lucknow Zoo for treatment.
He said PAC and police forces have been deployed in the area to avert any clashes between two communities.
Mishra said Ahmed has been arrested after an FIR was lodged against him for trying to entice enmity between two communities on the complaint of one Suresh Pandey,a resident of the same area. He said Ahmeds revolver has also been seized.
