Tempo driver dies in cross-fire between cops,chain-snatchers

A tempo driver was killed by a stray bullet during a cross-firing between police and two chain- snatchers near the UP Stock Exchange building in the city on Friday evening.

A tempo driver was killed by a stray bullet during a cross-firing between police and two chain- snatchers near the UP Stock Exchange building in the city on Friday evening.

The driver,Santosh Kumar Lodhi (25),who was hit by a bullet in his chest,was rushed to the Ursuala Horsman Memorial (UHM) Hospital,where the doctors declared him dead on arrival. The annoyed family members and local residents blocked the traffic opposite the UHM hospital for 30 minutes. Lodhi’s body has been sent to the hospital for postmortem.

Meanwhile,the police arrested one of the two chain-snatchers. They also recovered a country-made pistol,eight live cartridges,a motorcycle and two gold chains from the chain-snatcher.

Additional Superintendent of Police (Kanpur East),Kush Har Saurabh,said: “Acting on a tip-off,three police constables signalled the two chain-snatchers to stop their motorcycles. At this,they opened fire at the police and made an attempt to escape from the place. In response,the police also fired at them and succeeded in arresting one of them. The chain-snatcher arrested by the police has been identified as Shehzade. “The postmortem report will confirm that Lodhi was hit by a bullet fired by the police or the chain- snatchers,” he said. Lodhi’s father Prem Kumar said his son drove a tempo on the Lal Bangla- Bada Chauraha route. The ADM,City,Shailendra Kumar Singh,said the district administration would recommend an ex-gratia to Lodhi’s family members from the Chief Minister’s relief Fund.
