AICC general secretary Digivijaya Singh on Monday said he was surprised by the statement made by a “well-educated” person like Akhilesh Yadav on “18 per cent quota to Muslims”. Singh said he had read SP state president Akhilesh Yadav’s statement that his party would support congress if Congress agrees to provide 18 per cent reservation to Muslims.

“I would not have been surprised if SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav had given such a statement but I did not expect this from a well-educated person like Akhilesh. I am surprised that he spoke of such a thing which is not possible constitutionally,” said Digvijaya.

He added: “SP leaders know that following Supreme Court ruling, reservation cannot exceed 50 per cent but still they go on to give such statements. For bringing such reservation,a constitutional amendment is required and neither Congress nor SP has such numbers in Lok Sabha to get constitutional amendment cleared,”.

Addressing a election rally in Mathura,Samajwadi Party state president Akhilesh Yadav had said on Saturday that SP would support Congress if it agrees to provide 18 per cent reservation to Muslims in government services.

Blaming the Samajwadi Party for making promises that cannot be fulfilled,Singh said that if SP was serious about 18 per cent reservation, then they should have included it in its manifesto. He said that unlike SP,Congress kept its promise and introduced reservation that was promised by it in its manifesto.
