Sultanpur robbery case: STF kills a second accused
Anuj Pratap Singh’s death came after the death of Mangesh Yadav, another accused in the case, which had sparked political controversy in Uttar Pradesh.

UP’s Special Task Force (STF) shot dead an accused in the Sultanpur jewellery shop loot case early Monday morning.
Anuj Pratap Singh, a native of Amethi, had been on the run since his involvement in the dacoity case last month and carried a Rs 1 lakh reward on his head.
Singh’s death came amidst controversy surrounding the death of 28-year-old Mangesh Yadav, another accused, who was killed in a police encounter on September 5.
Police said they recovered two country-made pistols, cartridges, a bag containing silver jewelry, and a motorcycle from Singh.
On August 28, assailants looted jewellery worth Rs 1.5 crore from a shop in the densely populated Chowk area of Sultanpur at gunpoint. Police said that Anuj Pratap and Mangesh Yadav were the ones who entered the shop.
Reportedly acting on a tip, police officials set up a “trap” by carrying out vehicle checks and spotted Singh and another man on a motorcycle, who opened fire when police tried to stop them. While the other man escaped, Singh was injured and later died during treatment, police said.
Superintendent of Police, Unnao, Deepak Bhuker, said that Singh was first taken to a primary health center where doctors then referred him to the district hospital.
In the dacoity case, police had identified 14 persons involved. Nine are currently in judicial custody. Three suspects are still at large, each also with a Rs 1 lakh reward on their heads, said a police officer.
Mangesh Yadav’s death earlier this month had sparked political controversy, with Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav alleging that the encounter was “staged” and that Mangesh was killed “because of his caste.”
