The Uttar Pradesh Police on Friday arrested a sub-inspector who had allegedly been sexually assaulting a 26-year-old woman for the past three years under the pretext of giving her emotional support in a dowry harassment case she lodged in 2020.
The accused police officer has been identified as Mukesh Kumar, 28, a Firozabad native, who had joined the police force in 2018-19 on compassionate grounds, said Auraiya police.
According to the police, the woman’s ordeal began when Mukesh Kumar who was assigned to investigate her case would allegedly contact her regularly, both through calls and personal meetings to “develop friendship”. Under the guise of giving her support, he sexually harassed her at different places, officials said.
The woman claimed that the officer, who was already married, also gave her a fake promise to marry the victim, the officer said.
Based on her complaint, Auraiya Superintendent of Police Charu Nigam on Thursday suspended Kumar following a preliminary inquiry and initiated a departmental inquiry against him.
“Mukesh Kumar was booked on charges of rape. The medical examination of the victim is going on,” said Charu Nigam. She added that the victim’s statement before the magistrate would be recorded.
The accused was produced before a local court of Auraiya which remanded him in judicial custody on Friday. Mukesh.
The woman claimed even after he was transferred to another station in August, the harassment continued.
