‘State panel on SC/STs hasn’t met’

Union Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment Mukul Wasnik on Friday said that despite shortcomings in the implementation of SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act in UP,the vigilance and monitoring committee headed by the CM Mayawati has not met even once. Such committees oversee the implementation of the Act.

“In UP,the committee was formed after much delay and has not met once. We hope that the state government would soon take appropriate action to oversee proper implementation of civil rights and SC/ST Act,” said Wasnik.

UP,which had identified about 20 districts as sensitive in 1986,has been asked to conduct a fresh survey.
