To keep track of habitation on seismic zones IV and V in Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand, the Remote Sensing department of the Uttar Pradesh Directorate of Science and Technology has made a geographic information system map of the two states.
The department has found 80 spots lying in these seismic zones, which have rural or urban habitation. The project has been completed based on guidelines by the National Disaster Management Authority.
Director (remote sensing) Jitendra Mishra said,We had a seismic map of Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand. While UP has several areas that fall in zone IV,Uttarakhand has points both in zone IV and V high damage risk and very high damage risk zones.
Though no major earthquakes have been reported in the last five years, the damage quotient is always quite high because of habitation. Hence,a map has been made that shows villages and cities with the number of houses and buildings present along with green patches in the area,he added.
The survey, which took around two-and-a-half years to complete, shows 80 places where high damage can occur.
Among these,33 have huge buildings that can cause major damage even in case of small earthquakes. There are many green areas on these high damage risk zones, but they will not see any major physical damage in case of an earthquake, said Mishra.
The survey will act as information for the Natural Disaster Risk Management Programme.
With this map,it will be easier to identify villages and cities where the risk is more. Moreover, through this, awareness and capacity building programmes can be managed well, said Mishra.
The report will soon be submitted to the Centre.
