Three police constables of Gulawathi police station in Bulandshahr district suffered injuries in an alleged attack by Samajwadi Party workers on Monday.
Bulandshahr Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Nitin Tiwari said the attack on the policemen took place at Gulawathi market after a police team had gone there to stop cattle trading, which was running despite district administrations closure orders amid the recent movement of kanwariyas in the district.
The injured constables are undergoing treatment at a local hospital.
During the attack, the SP workers also allegedly snatched the station officers service revolver, although the weapon was later recovered,SSP Tiwari said.
Gulawathi police station Station Officer Kaushlendra Kumar Yadav said he,along with four other constables, had gone to Gulawathi market following information about cattle trading in violation of the administrations order.
While the team was giving out orders to shut down the operation,Kaale Khan,a member of the Gulawathi Nagarpalika,is said to have arrived at the scene accompanied by over two dozen associates. Khan threatened the team to leave the place and instigated his supporters to attack the cops, Yadav said, adding that Khan and others have been charged with rioting and dacoity.
Two of the accused have been arrested so far but Khan has not been caught,Yadav added.
According to the police,Khan and his men damaged the police jeep and pelted them with stones while also beating the constables with sticks.
The SPs Bulandshahr president Amjad Ali Guddu termed Kaale Khans status in the party to be that of a worker.
