Security agencies have stepped up vigil at IIT Kanpur and other prominent places in the city following the Varanasi blast. Kanpur DIG Ashok Jain said the IIT had received a threat in February but no fresh warning has been issued to the institution.
Jain also denied that the banned outfit,Indian Mujahideen (IM),which allegedly triggered the Varanasi blast,had issued a threat to the institution.
The DIG called the heightened security a routine process. Jain said the police have been alerted and patrolling has been increased at the IIT and at all prominent areas in the city. Security has also been beefed up at all prominent places in other cities of Uttar Pradesh,Jain said.
Vehicles are being checked randomly and people have been asked to keep a check on any suspicious movement in area,the DIG added.
Meanwhile,IIT Kanpur Registrar Sanjeev Kashalkar denied having information of a specific threat to the institution. The enhanced checking of vehicles and patrolling,Kashalkar said,is part of the regular security measures of the college.
