A court in Sambhal on Thursday issued non-bailable warrants (NBWs) against 24 absconding accused allegedly linked to the large-scale violence in the town on November 24 last year following a survey of the Shahi Jama Masjid.

Five people had died and several others, including police personnel, sustained injuries during the violence that broke out after the second court-ordered survey of the mosque to ascertain if it was built after destroying a temple.

“We have arrested 60 accused, including six women, who pelted stones at the police from their rooftops that day. As many as 91 more offenders are on the police radar for their involvement in the violence. They have either taken refuge in other states or at places of their relatives in nearby districts. We got 24 NBWs from a court yesterday. No one will be spared,”  Sambhal Superintendent of Police (SP) Krishna Kumar Bishnoi on Friday said.

On Thursday, the police arrested Mohsin, 28, and Husnain, 32, after identifying them through CCTV footage. They have been accused of sparking violence in the Hindupura Kheda locality near the mosque.

Among the 60 accused arrested is Adnan Mohammed, 30, a resident of Deepa Sarai locality, who allegedly fired at the SP during the violence.
