Sack defiant Khurshid,cries BJP

Salman Khurshid on Sunday drew criticism from the Opposition for his remarks on sub-quota for minorities and alleged defiance of the Election Commission.

Union Law Minister Salman Khurshid on Sunday drew criticism from the Opposition for his remarks on sub-quota for minorities and alleged defiance of the Election Commission, with the BJP demanding his sacking and accusing the Congress of working on a well “scripted conspiracy” to “communalise” the Uttar Pradesh Assembly polls.

The BJP’s NDA ally, the JD(U) demanded that Khurshid be banned from UP while the CPM disapproved of his “defiant stance”.

BJP leader L K Advani alleged that Khurshid was making a “mockery” of the model code of conduct. “The Prime Minister should sack Khurshid… No minister had ever made comments against the EC in such a way,” Advani said at an election meeting in Bhadohi on Sunday.

Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj said in Varanasi that PM Manmohan Singh should ask for Khurshid’s resignation. “We demand that without wasting any time, the PM should take Khurshid’s resignation. If he refuses to go,under sub-section 2 of Section 75 of the Constitution, the President must be asked for his dismissal,” she said.

Talking to reporters in Lucknow,Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Arun Jaitley said,“Lawlessness of the Law Minister has no place in democracy. The PM should set an example by sacking Khurshid.” He asked,“Is it an adamancy of one leader or a well-scripted conspiracy of the entire Congress?”

Jaitley said the Congress was trying to communalise the UP polls on the issues of minority sub-quota and Batla House encounter. Khurshid had reportedly said in Azamgarh that UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi had cried after seeing the images of Batla House encounter. “Had any Congress leader cried when Ajmal Kasab killed so may innocent persons in Mumbai attack or when Afzal Guru killed people in Parliament attack?” Jaitley questioned.

Stating that it is a matter of credibility of the EC and that it should “send him to jail”,BJP leader Uma Bharti said: “I appeal the EC to maintain its credibility; it should take stern action against the minister.”

“Khurshid should be banned by the PM in UP. If there were a good PM,he would have been sacked,” JD(U) leader Sharad Yadav said in Lucknow.

Criticising Khurshid,CPM leader Prakash Karat said,“We do not approve of Khurshid’s defiant stance. He is a Union minister and people occupying responsible posts must not talk and behave irresponsibly,” Karat, who was at Allahabad on Sunday to address election meetings, told reporters.
