With the Assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh drawing near and the party facing heat over the suicide of Dalit scholar Rohith Vemula in Hyderabad, the BJP’s Scheduled Caste Morcha in UP has launched a month-long statewide campaign on B R Ambedkar, titled — Dr Ambedkar sabke hain (Dr Ambedkar is for all).
“Dr Ambedkar was also an economist, a social and labour reformer, and he did a lot for the society in these sectors. These qualities of Ambedkar have never been brought before the masses and he has only been isolated as a Dalit leader. The BJP’s Scheduled Catse (SC) wing will highlight these issues and give a message to the people that Ambedkar was a leader for all the sections of the society,” said Gautam Chaudhary, the BJP state president for SC Morcha.
As part of the campaign, which was launched from Allahabad on Republic Day, the party’s SC wing will hold conferences in Dalit-dominated areas of every district.
At the conferences, the speakers will also highlight the schemes of Narendra Modi government that are meant to help deprived sections of the society,” Chaudhary added.
“Dalits and deprived sections are largest beneficiaries of such schemes like Prime Minister Jan Dhan Yojana, loan scheme of MUDRA and other insurance schemes being provided at nominal amount of premiums,” he said.
While Chaudhary claimed that the campaign was not politically motivated, party sources said it was aimed to make a dent in the Dalit votebank of the BSP ahead of the next year’s Assembly polls.
Meanwhile, to affirm its pro-Dalit credentials, the RSS, too, has asked its volunteers across the country to adopt at least one family of the Dalit community and eat food with them.

Last week, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had visited Ambedkar Mahasabha in Lucknow and offered floral tribute to the urn of Ambedkar.
BJP leader and Union Minister Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti, too, has appealed the Dalits to support BJP in the Assembly election.
Jyoti was in Lucknow to interact with traders on ‘chai pe charcha’ programme that BJP MP from Kaushambi Vinod Sonkar had organised with ‘The Vegetable and Fruit Merchants Association’. During the interaction, Jyoti said that only a person like Modi can understand the grievances of Dalits and backwards as he has lived with them.
