There is more to Bihar’s indigenous art and craft than the famous Madhubani paintings and litti chokha,an everyday food that has attained an almost iconic status. There is also West Champaran’s Sikki art, pure desi silk from Banka and Silao’s khaja (a sweet).

All these and much more are on display at the three-day “Bihar Mahotsav”,which was inaugurated by UP Governor B L Joshi on Friday.

The event is the first to be held outside Bihar as part of the state’s centenary celebrations. The Mahotsav is organised jointly by the Bihar government and North Central Zone Cultural Centre,Allahabad.

Madan Puri, manning a stall on Sikki art, talks about how difficult it is to make utilities using the art. It is women who do most of the hard work. Puri,a post master, gives the entire credit to his wife Poonam Goswami for producing Sikki art items. She was among 20 women to have received training for developing items using Sikki art.
