Rare surgery at CSMMU

Doctors at the CSMMU have successfully changed the sex of a female child suffering from an inter-sex disorder.

Doctors at the CSMMU have successfully changed the sex of a female child suffering from an inter-sex disorder. “It was a rare surgery because changing the sex of a female to male is very difficult and we have performed it successfully,” said Professor S N Kureel,Head of the Department of Paediatric Surgery at CSMMU.

Born in 2004,the child from Rae Bareli, showed initial signs of the disorder when she was seven months old, said Kureel adding: “Her tests revealed that while the female organs were underdeveloped, male organs were also present.”

“Due to lack of awareness, people generally take such children to be eunuchs, irrespective of the fact that this disorder could be cured. In this case, the child was brought to us well in time,” he said. The child’s father said: “I am thankful to the doctors that they saved my child from the stigma.”
