A DAY after arresting a 48-year-old businessman and former block pramukh for allegedly attempting to disrobe a teenage girl on the pretext of arranging a job for her, the Kannauj police have decided to invoke rape charges against the accused. This comes after the 15-year-old, in her police statement, alleged Nawab Singh sexually assaulting her.
The police are also investigating the possible role of the girl’s 38-year-old aunt, who was with the girl when they went to Singh’s residence, in the case.
On Tuesday, the girl’s parents arrived in Kannauj. The girl is staying with a relative in Kannauj.
“The girl’s parents have filed a complaint against the aunt, who apparently fled after the incident. The aunt’s role, particularly her earlier objection to conducting a medical examination of the girl, would be thoroughly investigated. The medical examination was done only after the girl’s parents arrived,” said Superintendent of Police, Kannauj, Amit Kumar Anand.
The girl’s parents learned of the incident through the police, as the aunt, who was present at the time, did not inform them.

According to the police, late Sunday evening, the girl called the control room and reported that some of her clothes had been removed and that an attempt was made to do “something wrong” to her. A police team reached the spot and rescued her. Nawab Singh was taken to the police station, the police added.
The incident triggered a political controversy, with the ruling BJP claiming that the accused is a Samajwadi Party member. However, the SP denied the allegations, saying that Nawab Singh was not affiliated with the party for the past five years.
