Rampur library gets its imprint on postal stamp

Rampur, which has been in the news during the Lok Sabha elections due to the tussle between SP leaders Azam Khan and Amar Singh — is once again ready to make headlines.

Rampur, which has been in the news during the Lok Sabha elections due to the tussle between SP leaders Azam Khan and Amar Singh — is once again ready to make headlines. This time,it is not politics but the heritage value of the once princely state.

The Central government has decided to bring out a postal stamp on the Rampur Raza Library — a treasure house of Indo-Islamic learning and art. The Rs 5 denomination stamp will be released at a function to be held at Raj Bhavan on June 19.

“We received the information yesterday,” said Prof Shah Abdussalam,Officer on Special Duty for the library.

The Rampur Raza Library was founded by Nawab Faizullah Khan in 1774. After Independence and the merger of Rampur state in the Union of India, the library was brought under the management of a trust. On July 1,1975,by an act of the Parliament, the library was declared an institution of national importance. A Rampur Raza Library Board was constituted and the state Governor was nominated its ex-officio chairman.

The library has 17,000 specimen of artistic value. It boasts of the rare Arabic Quran written by Hazrat Ali — around 1,400 years old — and a Ramayan written in Persian language with hundreds of Mughal miniature paintings in it. There are 200 manuscripts on palm leaves, around 5,000 miniature paintings and nearly 3,000 specimen of Islamic calligraphy. The miniature paintings represent the Mongol,Mughal,Persian,Rajput,Pahari,Awadhi and Indo-European schools of art.
