Abdul Qavi, one of the prime accused in the 2005 BSP MLA Raju Pal murder case in Prayagraj who was on the run for the past 18 years, on Wednesday surrendered before a CBI court in Lucknow which sent him to judicial custody.
“Abdul Qavi appeared before the court in presence of counsel from both sides on Wednesday. The court sent him to judicial custody. The trial in the case is going on,” said a CBI official.
A resident of Bhakanda area in Kaushambi, Qavi is said to be an associate of former MP Atiq Ahmed. Atiq and his younger brother Khalid Azim, alias, Ashraf, are also prime accused in the Raju Pal murder case.
As Qavi remained absconding for years, the CBI attached his properties after obtaining the court’s permission, said agency officials. Besides, a massive search operation for Qavi was launched by the UP Police after the murder of advocate Umesh Pal, a key witness in the Raju Pal murder case, and his two gunners in Prayagraj on February 24.
On his way home on January 25, 2005, Raju Pal and his associates were attacked by armed assailants in the Dhoomanganj police station area in Prayagraj. The incident left Raju Pal and his two associates —Devilal Pal and Sandeep Yadav — dead and three others — Ruksana, Saif alias Saifulla, and Om Prakash Pal — injured. Based on the complaint lodged by Raju Pal’s wife Pooja, an FIR was registered against Atiq, his brother Ashraf and seven unidentified persons at Dhoomanganj police station on the murder and other charges.
Also wanted by Kaushambi police in two cases, Qavi, a history sheeter, was carrying a reward of Rs 1 lakh. According to police, Qavi was booked in 2020 for allegedly threatening a witness in the Raju Pal murder case. The second case against Qavi was registered in March this year after police claimed to have seized illegal arms from his residence.
ADG, Prayagraj zone, Bhanu Bhaskar said “Kaushambi police was working along with the CBI to arrest Abdul Qavi, who was wanted for the last 18 years.”
Kaushambi Superintendent of Police Brijesh Srivastava said, “Abdul Qavi was absconding for the last 18 years. Kaushabmi police were also searching for him in two cases.”
Sarai Akil police station (Kaushabmi) SHO Vineet Singh said, “As many as 19 persons, including his brother Abdul Qadir and other relatives, have been arrested for allegedly providing help and shelter to Qavi.”
In August 2019, the CBI filed a chargesheet against 10 persons, including Atiq, Ahsraf and Qavi in the Raju Pal murder case. One of the 10 accused Nafees Kalia, alias, Nafis Ahmad, has died.
