AICC general secretary Rahul Gandhi faced the anger of Congress workers today as he began the post-poll review from his parliamentary constituency of Amethi.
Rahul began his three-day tour from Tiloi Assembly constituency, which was won by a Congress candidate, and then moved on to a review of Salon constituency, where the party candidate lost in the recent Assembly election.
Irrespective of victory or loss, party workers at both the places complained about the lack of direct interaction of senior party leaders, including Rahul, with grassroots-level workers during the election. Workers told him that they had wanted to complain about wrong selection of sitting MLAs as candidates, but could not find a way to reach him.
Gandhi assured the workers that the Congress would revamp the party organisation in the state from top to bottom in the next two-three months. He also told party workers to start preparing for the Lok Sabha election, assuring them that required changes in the functioning of the party would be done soon,in including Rae Bareli and Amethi.
Out of five Assembly constituencies – Salon,Tiloi,Jagdishpur,Gauriganj and Amethi – that fall in his parliamentary constituency, the Congress won just two -Tiloi and Jagdishpur.
He was not as enthusiastic as he was before the election. We told him there was no lacunae in the enthusiasm of the workers here but the very selection of candidates was wrong. We told him that we had complained about wrong selection of candidates because sitting MLAs had not worked. But there was no one to listen to us and there was no way to even reach him, said a party worker at the meeting in Salon.
Rahul began with a meeting at Ramjanki Vajpayee Balika Vidhyalaya in Samrauta area of Toloi constituency. The closed-door meeting continued for about three hours. Sources said Rahul met the workers booth-wise. Separate groups were formed of the booths won by the Congress candidate, booths where we came second, booths where we did not perform well and another group of 20 senior party leaders belonging to the Assembly seat, said a leader.
Rahul said that a system would be introduced whereby workers could easily interact with him. He said that within the next few months, problems of lack of connectivity with senior leaders would be solved, said a worker.
