PROTEST against GM rice

Mayuk Rawat of Uttarakhand caused an upset in the All India Talent Series tennis tournament when he defeated fourth seed Swapnil P Singh of Uttar Pradesh.

Mayuk Rawat of Uttarakhand caused an upset in the All India Talent Series tennis tournament when he defeated fourth seed Swapnil P Singh of Uttar Pradesh by 6-1,6-3 in the boys under- 14 singles semi-finals at SDS Tennis Academy,Lucknow on Thursday.

Fourth seed Shruti Gupta of West Bengal caused an upset in the girls under-14 singles semis when she outclassed top seed Bakul Negi of Delhi by 6-1,6-3 in the last four-stage match of the section. Boys under-12 top seed Shree Krishna had an easy sail into the finals. He defeated Ankit Rao in the semi-finals by 6-2,6-0 with good ease to reach the finals in style.

Cathedral School wins

Cathedral School defeated Modern Academy,Gomti Nagar by 63 runs in their quarter-final match of the 13th Avinash Chandra Chaturvedi Memorial Inter College Tournament at Chowk Stadium,Lucknow on Thursday. In a pre-quarterfinal match of the same tourney played at KD Singh ‘Babu’ Stadium,St Mary’s RDSO defeated St. John Bosco,Gomti Nagar by 13 runs. The highlight of the match was an all-round performance by Manish Verma (45 runs; 4 for 44) of St. Mary’s.

Meerut Zone triumphs

Meerut Zone defeated Lucknow Zone in the boys kabaddi final and it defeated Varanasi Zone in the girls kabaddi final to bag the top honours in the under-16 state level kabaddi tournament organised as a part of the ‘Panchayat Yuva Krida Khel Abhiyan’ at SAI Sub-Centre,Lucknow.

In table-tennis,five players from the boys’ section— Shivam Mishra,Shubham Malik,Shubhendra,Rishabh Sikka and Yash Ekka and from the girls’ section Shazia,Archana Rai,Vidya Singh,Vaishali Sahu and Malti Tiwari have been selected to take part in the national level tournament.

Kanpur to face Allahabad

Kanpur will take on Allahabad in the opening match of the Kabir Shah Memorial Twenty20 State Media Cricket Tournament to be held at the KD Singh ‘Babu’ Stadium,Lucknow from Friday.

The match will start from 9.30 am. In the second semi-final,hosts Lucknow meet Varanasi at 12.30 pm. The final is slated to be held from 9.30 am on Saturday. Asian Games gold medallist Sudha Singh,Director Sports (Uttar Pradesh) Dr Hari Om and hockey Olympians will also grace the opening ceremony. Tennis: Mayuk upsets Swapnil in semis
