President Pranab Mukherjee today called for ensuring a sizeable expansion in teaching institutions for doctors, nurses and paramedics, stating that there are only 1.9 health workers in India per 1,000 persons.
Speaking at the convocation of King George Medical University (KGMU),the President said that the density of doctors in India is only 0.6 per 1,000 persons and that of nurses and midwives is 1.3 per 1,000,which points clearly to the acute shortage of healthcare professionals.
Moreover, due to skewed distribution of health workers, the vulnerable populations in rural, tribal and hilly areas continue to be under-served,said Mukherjee on his first visit to the state as the President. He also stated that lack of human resources is as responsible for inadequate provision of health services as lack of physical infrastructure.
In such a scenario, there is a need to encourage positive traditional healthcare practices and local remedies,he said. The ongoing initiatives for integrating Ayush and capacity development of the traditional healthcare providers needs strengthening, he said.
To enable government medical colleges to expand the number of seats and create new postgraduate departments, the President said that financial assistance to the states is already being provided by the Centre. He said distance learning should be encouraged as well as extension services in rural areas.
The President awarded medals to 15 toppers of the university during the convocation. Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav present on the occasion.
