Chief Minister Mayawati ended her one-month-long election campaign by addressing her last election meetings in Lakhimpur and Rampur on Wednesday. Mayawati had started her election campaign from Sitapur on February 1. Although the campaign for the seven-phase election ends on Thursday,Mayawati will not address any public meeting tomorrow. During the one-month period,she addressed a total of 63 public meetings in different parts of the state. Unlike leaders of other parties,she kept a distance from the media.
Unlike other leaders,Mayawati did not divide her campaign in parts. She began her campaign on February 1 and ended on February 29 in one go.
Amar critical of Ajit in UPA cabinet
Rampur: Expelled Samajwadi Party MP Amar Singh on Wednesday alleged that Congress-led UPA government has overlooked RLD chief Ajit Singhs past while inducting him into the Union Cabinet. The Congress party had ignored pasts factual statistics,which reveal that Ajit Singh had supported saffron politicians like LK Advani,said Singh. It was me who supported Congress supremo Sonia Gandhi and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh during their very odd days, said founder of Lok Manch at a rally for his partys candidate. I happen to be the savior of Manmohan Singhs government,due to my jugad some Lok Sabha members had agreed to support the government and prevent it form its down fall but Congress played deceptive tactics against me, Singh claimed.
EC clears air on postal ballot counting
New Delhi: Clearing the air over the time limit for receiving polled postal ballot by Returning Officers (ROs),the Election Commission on Wednesday said all postal ballot papers received before start of the counting process will be counted. Setting at rest all doubts raised by various sections in this regard,the Election Commission issued fresh instructions,saying that postal ballot papers received by ROs upto the time fixed for commencement of counting shall be taken into account. There is no prohibition in law that the votes on postal ballots cannot be recorded or received after the date and time fixed for taking poll at polling stations. However,it is further clarified that no application for issue of postal ballot paper can be entertained after the preparation of marked copy of electoral roll for use in polling stations, the EC note said. The counting is schedule to begin on March 6 from 8 am.
