Simplicity returns to television with Jyoti
There are shows on television that catch the fancy of one and all for their contemporary theme or flavour. And there are those that are old-fashioned and quietly become the odd-favourite of a discerning class that cherishes quaint stuff. Jyoti on NDTVimagine is the latter type but has taken its unit and actors by pleasant surprise with the response.
I knew the story and the central character would strike a chord, but not among the class of people who find my number and call up just to tell me how much they love Jyoti and why, says Sneha Wagh, who plays the eponymous role in the drama about a girl breadwinner of a large conservative family.
The character is like me in that I too have a dear younger sister. And that’s not where the similarity ends. Like Jyoti,I am a stickler for self-respect to which every girl has a right and I think it is every girls duty to guard it, she says.
Her character in the drama is associated with a trusted male friend who makes advances at her. I may not pardon such betrayal of trust as my character does. I would not let such a situation arise in the first place, avers Sneha, whose previous experience comprises only the Marathi shows Kaata Rute Kunala,Jeev Laga andAduri Ek Kahani.
My director trained me rigorously to get my Hindi diction right, particularly when it comes to mouthing Urdu words and expressions. But now I am comfortable, says the 21 years old Maharashtrian, speaking throughout the interview in chaste Hindi.
