The third phase of polling in the states 15 constituencies registered an estimated 44 to 45 per cent turnout.
Lucknow and Kanpur,however,saw only about 35 per cent and 39 per cent polling respectively while it was 46 per cent in Rae Bareli. The highest turnout was seen in Sitapur and Jhansi,where about 50 per cent voters cast their ballot. Around 2.23 crore had voted in the third phase on Thursday.
Chief Electoral Officer Anuj Kumar Bishnoi said there was an average 44 per cent polling,but it may increase. The polling remained peaceful and incident-free,Bishnoi told reporters.
Chief Minister Mayawati was among the early voters. She came around 7.15 am to cast her vote at Lucknow Montessori School. She was accompanied by BSP general secretary Satish Chandra Mishra and the partys Lucknow candidate Akhilesh Das.
The BJP national president,Rajnath Singh,cast his vote at a polling booth in the office of the PWD near Raj Bhavan.
Bishnoi said there were reports of glitches in EVMs at few places. The problems in the EVM machines were soon removed, he added. The CEO office also received reports about poll boycott at a few booths in different districts like Fatehpur,Lucknow,Mohanlalganj,Hamirpur,Kanpur Dehat and Hardoi.
The record available in the CEOs office shows 35 per cent polling in Lucknow is in keeping with the past trend. In the Assembly elections 2007,the city had witnessed about 31 per cent poling,while the polling in Lok Sabha elections 2004 was 35.41 per cent.
