(Express File Photo) THE ALLAHABAD High Court on Monday granted bail to jailed gangster-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari while hearing an appeal filed by him against a judgment passed by a Ghazipur court in April this year that awarded him 10 years’ imprisonment in a case under the Uttar Pradesh Gangsters & Anti Social Activities (Prevention) Act.

“As noted earlier, the prayer for suspension of execution of sentence and grant of bail during pendency of appeal is allowed,” the court of Justice Raj Beer Singh said in the order.
The court observed, “Before parting with this order, it may be observed that in disposal of this application, this court has not examined the contention of the learned counsel for the appellant that the appellant has been detained in custody in this case more than the sentence awarded by the trial court. If the appellant has any such grievance, in that connection he may file a separate application.”
The court has directed to list the next date of appeal in November, 2023. The court added in its order “In view of aforesaid, the prayer for stay of conviction of the appellant is refused and hereby
rejected.”
On April 29 this year, a Ghazipur court sentenced Mukhtar Ansari to 10 years’ imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 5 lakh on him in connection with the Gangsters’ Act case filed at Mohammadabad police station in Ghazipur in 2007.
Mukhtar Ansari filed a petition seeking direction to suspend the sentence awarded by Ghazipur court and to release him on bail during the pendency of the appeal. He also prayed that Ghazipur court judgment should also remain during the pendency of the present appeal. It is further prayed that the realisation of the fine should also be stayed during pendency of the appeal otherwise he (Appellant) would suffer an irreparable loss and injury.
