MLA said nothing missing, cops wonder how much taken

The recovery of over Rs 50 lakh from a man arrested in Delhi for the murder of BJP leader Hukum Singh’s wife Rewati, has left the UP police flummoxed.

The recovery of over Rs 50 lakh from a man arrested in Delhi for the murder of BJP leader Hukum Singh’s wife Rewati, has left the UP police flummoxed.

On basis of Hukum Singh’s initial statement that nothing was missing from his residence, the police had ruled out robbery as a motive of the crime. Now they are wondering how much the killers had actually taken away.

Praveen Kumar, the Senior Superintendent of Police, Muzaffarnagar, said Jasod Choudhary — on whom a reward of Rs 12,000 was announced on Tuesday — was arrested and Rs 50.80 lakh was found in his house in Badarpur.

Jasod — who is being brought to Muzaffarnagar — revealed that two other wanted men,Ravi Kamat and Pradip, walked away with Rs 12 lakh in cash and jewellery worth several lakhs.

According to the SSP,Singh had now said that the money taken was proceeds from the sale of a property which he had kept at home, but he did not remember the exact amount. Nor did he have any idea of the value of the jewellery missing.

Singh told the police that he was in a state of shock over the murder when he made the initial statement.

That robbery was the motive of the crime became clear when the police recovered Rs 2 lakh on Monday evening following the arrest of MLA’s domestic help Shankar and one of his associates,Lallan Kamat. DGP Karamvir Singh had then claimed that Rs 10 lakh was looted from the house.

Muzaffarnagar SP (City) Akash Kulhary said the interrogation of Jasod would help them reach Ravi and Pradip. Their information was that both of them were in Delhi and staying together.

Jasod has also told police that Pradip, who is from UP’s Mau district, was a friend of Ravi and was involved in the conspiracy to kill Rewati. On Saturday night,Pradip kept watch outside the legislator’s house while Shankar,Ravi,Lallan and Jasod executed the crime.

From the interrogation of the arrested men,it emerges that the crime was planned by the domestic help Ravi, whom Singh had removed about eight months ago. It was Ravi who roped in Lallan,Jasod and Pradip. They found cash kept in a briefcase in Rewati’s room and also in a safe in an adjoining room. The jewellery was also found in the safe.

Singh’s servant Shanker helped the killers enter the house. The other help,Ajay did not know anything about the conspiracy.
