Three Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) scheme workers died after reportedly inhaling some poisonous gas while cleaning an unused well without wearing any safety equipment in Barabanki district on Saturday.
According to police,the incident took place at Raipur village in Asandara area at 1 pm,when three labourers Awadh Ram (42),resident of neighbouring Moham med Chandipur village,Siya Ram (43) and Vinod Kumar(30),both residents of Raipur fainted inside an unused well,minutes after they entered it to get it cleaned.
The officials said the well had not been in use for long and the work of cleaning it was being done under MGNREGA.
The three labourers were rescued from the well by other workers present there and rushed to Barabanki district hospital. They died during treatment.
While Barabanki District Magistrate Ministhy S could not be reached despite several attempts,Additional District Magistrate JP Singh said an inquiry has been ordered into the incident. He said family members of the deceased labourers will also be compensated.
Singh said the labourers working in villages usually do not wear masks or safety gears during cleaning. He said postmortem of the bodies has been conducted,but he had not received the reports. However,Singh said prima facie it appears that the labourers died after inhaling some poisonous gas. No FIR has been lodged in the matter.
