Memorials: Akhilesh vows action against guilty

A day after Lokayukta N K Mehrotra indicted 199 people in his report on construction of memorials during the BSP regime,Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav said the state government would take action under provisions of law against the guilty.

The report had recommended former public works department minister Naseemuddin Siddiqui and former mining minister Babu Singh Kushwaha along with 17 others to be booked under under Prevention of Corruption Act,IPC sections 409 (criminal breach of trust by public servant) and 120 B (conspiracy).

“Action will be taken as per provisions of law against those found guilty. There have been serious charges and probe is taking place” Akhilesh told reporters after the cabinet meeting on Tuesday.

Former BSP minister Naseemuddin Siddiqui on Tuesday questioned the legal status of the Lokayukta.

“Some people have gone to the apex court over the legality of the manner in which the tenure of the Lokayukta has been extended by the SP government. The matter is likely to come up soon with the Supreme Court serving notices to the government and Lokayukta,” Siddiqui,aide of BSP chief Mayawati,told reporters at Jaunpur.
