A day after the UPA gave the go-ahead for the creation of a separate Telangana state,Bahujan Samaj Party president Mayawati Wednesday asked the Centre to divide UP into four states on the lines of the proposal that her government had sent in 2011 after obtaining the approval of the assembly.
Mayawati said the BSP government had sent the proposal to the Centre on November 23,2011 that sought reorganisation of UP in four states Purvanchal,Bundelkhand,Awadh and Paschim Pradesh. It is unfortunate that the proposal is stil\l pending before the Congress-led UPA government although the Constitution empowers the Centre,through Parliament,to create new states, Mayawati said.
She said the Centres decision on Telangana was correct,although it came late. She supported the demands for creation of Gorkhaland from West Bengal and Vidarbha out of Maharashtra.
Stating that her party supported creation of smaller administrative units,Mayawati said,During my four terms as chief minister,various new divisions,police ranges,zones,districts and tehsils were created to facilitate better development and services to people in UP.
She asked union ministers from UP who support division of the state to exert pressure on the Centre to take a decision on the pending proposal.
Mayawati also asked Centre and UP Governor to intervene into the matter of suspension of IAS officer Durga Shakti Nagpal who had fallen prey to the mining mafias. There was anarchy,and goondas and mafia were ruling in the Samajwadi Party government while honest officials were facing hardships,she said.
She repeated her demand for imposition of Presidents rule in the state.
Wont allow division of UP,says SP
Opposing the division of UP,PWD Minister Shivpal Yadav said,We are totally against it. SP does not believe in division of a large state. We are not concerned about Mayawatis stand as she had even advocated division of Uttar Pradesh. He said no plan to divide UP can succeed. We are in absolute majority in the state. We will not allow any move to divide our state, he said.
