A Manipuri student was arrested for allegedly duping foreign students studying in Uttar Pradesh through an Internet fraud.

Khangya Kasan (20),a BSc student, was arrested from Pune on Thursday by a team of the Uttar Pradesh Police.

He was brought to Faizabad on a transit remand on Friday and produced before a court. He was sent to a 14-day judicial custody.

“A group of Fiji students, studying in a local college, had registered a complaint in January that they had been duped of Rs 42,000 after they acted upon an email about winning a lottery of 5 lakh US dollars,” Deputy Superintendent of Police Rajesh Pandey said.

The email asked the students to deposit Rs 42,000 in an Axis Bank account for claiming the winning amount. Though Umesh Prasad and a few others deposited the money, they did not get the promised amount.

Following this, they registered a complaint with the police, added Pandey. Later,on the directives of District Police Chief R K S Rathore,a team was constituted to nab the culprits. “We were on the look out for the fraudster for several months. The Maharashtra Police and Axis Bank officials assisted us in our inquiry,” said Pandey.

We came to know that Kasan used to operate the account in which the money was deposited,” he added. “We believe Kasan is part of a well-organised online fraud racket and can provide vital clues,” he said.
