BJP looks for Atal support
The by-election to Lucknow (West) Assembly constituency remains a problem for the BJP even as Lalji Tandon has announced his full backing for party candidate Amit Puri. Till not so long ago,it was considered the safest seat for the party. Tandon had represented it for long until he became MP in May. It was part of Lucknow Lok Sabha constituency, which former Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee had represented for five consecutive terms from 1991 to 2004. But the BJP’s decision to field Puri did not go down well with many party workers. The party has now come out with an appeal from Atal Behari Vajpayee, asking the people to vote for Puri. It hopes the appeal will more than make up for the damage done to Puri’s prospects by non-cooperation and even sabotage by some sections.

Firozabad constellation
So far,Firozabad was known for its bangles and glasswork. The Lok Sabha by-election has turned it into a VIP constituency. First Rahul Gandhi decided to visit the town to campaign for Congress candidate Raj Babbar. To counter the Rahul effect, the SP decided to get Sanjay Dutt and other actors to campaign for Dimple Yadav. The Congress then decided to bring Haryana Chief Minister Bhupendra Singh Hooda to win over the Jats. The SP quickly mended fences with UP’s own Jat leader Ajit Singh, who was so far aligned with the BJP,and decided to bring in his charming US-educated son Jayant Choudhary for campaigning. Never before had Firozabad seen such a contest. Never before had so many high-flying campaigners descended on the town. The upshot is that the election has ceased to be the cakewalk that many had initially thought it was for Dimple Yadav.

Where is behenji?
While Congress and Samajwadi Party leaders are braving the heat and dust in the by-elections for 11 assembly and one Lok Sabha seat, there is little visible activity in the ruling Bahujan Samaj Party. Sources said the party office here is getting frantic calls from candidates across all constituencies going to polls on November 7,but Behanji has other priorities. On October 29,the Chief Minister left for Delhi to consult her lawyers regarding the cases pending in Supreme Court. On November 4,the court will take up the contempt notice it had issued to Chief Secretary Atul Gupta for prima facie violation of the order for stopping construction work on all parks and memorials in Lucknow. Since these projects are close to the Chief Minister’s heart, she would like work on them to resume at the earliest.

City’s Canada craze
Sixteen-year-old Mohammad Amir Khan,‘baby’ of the Indian Hockey team, which returned triumphant from Canada after winning the seven-match Test series 6-0,is the new darling of sports lovers here.

Last week, the Sports Authority of India sub-centre at Lucknow, where the Allahabad lad is a trainee, felicitated him. They also honoured his coach and his parents.

Coach Mohammad Raza said: “Renowned Olympians and top officials of the Centre attended the function and everybody congratulated Wasiq Khan (Amir’s father). He was simply overwhelmed.”

Wasiq Khan is man of modest means who must have made several sacrifices so that his son could pursue his passion for hockey. Surely,he deserved the honour, just as his son and the coach.
