Kushwaha’s influence
Why did BSP state president Swami Prasad Maurya not get his old portfolio of Cooperatives? The talk among the bureaucrats is that Babu Singh Kushwaha — the powerful Mines,Cooperatives and Panchayati Raj Minister — was finding it difficult to deal with Principal Secretary of Panchayati Raj,R K Sharma. For,if Kushwaha is a favourite minister of Mayawati,Sharma is one of her favourite babus. Sharma was even an accused in the Taj Corridor case. So,Kushwaha used his influence to get rid of Panchayati Raj. The portfolio, along with Sharma, went to Maurya.

Bad year for traders’ leaders
The year 2009 has been a bad year for traders’ leader Banwari Lal Kanchal. Before the Lok Sabha elections,he had left the Samajwadi Party and joined the BSP,losing his Rajya Sabha seat. Instead of rewarding him,the BSP has expelled him from the party for his alleged anti-party activity. His rival in traders’ politics,Sandeep Bansal, has also been expelled. It is said that Mayawati was fed up with their rivalry and decided to get rid of both. One does not know what Bansal thinks, but Kanchal is undeterred. He says he will continue to serve the BSP. But then what options does he or for that matter Bansal have? In all probability, until the next elections, the two traders’ leaders will have to remain in political wilderness.

Amar and Netaji’s wishes
The event on November 17 was organised by the SP to felicitate Maharashtra MLA Abu Asim Azmi for his fight for the honour of Hindi, but irrepressible Amar Singh decided to use the opportunity to settle scores with the Yadav brigade that has been needling him lately. When Mulayam Singh Yadav tried to silence him,Amar Singh said: “Netaji, please don’t stop me today, let me speak and settle the issue once for all.” Amar Singh then went on to say that the leaders from Ballia,Azamgarh and Jaunpur should know that he has not usurped anybody’s right and position, and whatever he was doing and had done in the past was in compliance of Netaji’s wishes. If the leaders from eastern UP had any grievance, then they should better speak to Netaji, instead of blaming him.SP’s parivarvad
After the SP’s debacle in Firozabad Lok Sabha and Etawah and Bharthana Assembly by-elections,the issue of “Parivarvad” in the party has come alive. “Samajwad Par Parivarvad Bhari Hai,” said a partyman, who pointed out that all important posts — party leader in Lok Sabha,Rajya Sabha,UP Assembly, state president, national president — belong to the family. Certain SP leaders have conveyed to Netaji that the issue needs to be addressed at the earliest to win back the confidence of the people. Former MP and general secretary Mohan Singh has even written an article in a Hindi daily. But Netaji is yet to give any indication that things will change. SP leaders believe that Mohan Singh now risks losing his nomination for the Rajya Sabha election.

A tough boss
Officials at the UP Police headquarters have a problem ever since Karamvir Singh became the DGP. He makes it a point to attend office regularly, unlike his predecessor who spent a lot of time in the Secretariat and the Annexe building. Karamvir Singh,on the other hand, goes there only if a meeting is scheduled. Since he is around most of the time, the officers have to ensure their own presence in office. Who knows when the DGP may summon them,or ask for some information, and their absence from office without a valid reason could land them in trouble?

Media-cut
The Asian Table Tennis Championship, which concluded on Sunday, exposed the UP Table Tennis Association. There were several power cuts which halted matches in the middle. The hall had a standby generator, but the association forgot to arrange for fuel. Players said they had never seen powercuts in an international event of this level. On Friday night, the organisers were in such hurry for an “official dinner” at a five-star hotel that they switched off the power supply immediately after the matches ended at 10 pm. Left stranded in the dark were some journalists in the media room who thought it was a usual powercut. They waited for some time and then called for help, but there was nobody around. Somehow, they negotiated the stairs and found their way to the gate.

Nehru-Gandhi family’s man
Kishorilal Sharma, the powerful representative of the Nehru-Gandhi family in Amethi and Rae Bareli,is finding it difficult to keep pace with the party’s Gen Next. Picked by the late Rajiv Gandhi to look after party affairs and his constituency in the late 1980’s,Sharma wielded enormous influence, especially since the Nehru-Gandhi family does not allow even the PCC chief to meddle in the two constituencies. It was, therefore, strange to see Kishorilal kept at a distance when Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Vadra visited Amethi and Rae Bareli on Friday. He waited outside as Rahul and Priyanka interacted with women in different villages. Sharma’s loyalists, however, claim that he will weather the storm as the family is dependent on him to carry out their tasks.
