Out of touch
Plagued by internal problems, the Bharatiya Janata Party seems to have lost touch with the outer world. On Saturday, the BJP issued a statement, saying that its president Ramapati Ram Tripathi had criticised the lathicharge on Shiksha Mitras who held a demonstration in front of the state Assembly. The fact is that there was no lathicharge. Despite having an office near the Assembly, the party was unaware of the incident. Somebody pointed out the mistake and within hours the party came out with an amended statement, replacing lathicharge with dhakka-mukki (pushing and shoving) by the police. Now,when did you see a demonstration where there was no dhakka-mukki? A party leader blamed the ludicrous statement on the instructions given to the media cell to send out at least one press release every day. It also shows the BJPs desperation for publicity.
Mulayams love
Samajwadi Party leader Mulayam Singh Yadav not only went to Singapore to accompany Amar Singh back home, but also ensured that all the family members who were in politics were present at the Delhi airport to receive him on Sunday. Amar Singh, who was returning after a kidney transplant, was reportedly unhappy that unlike his other friends Mulayam Singh just performed the formality of visiting him in the hospital. If someone like Amitabh Bachchan and his wife Jaya Bachchan can camp in Singapore for days to take care of Amar Singh, why cant Mulayam Singh?
Back home
The return of 1975-batch IPS officer Karamvir Singh from Central deputation has sparked much speculation among police officers. Although the state government is yet to decide about his posting, grapevine has it that he may well become the next DGP. After all,he has returned to his parent cadre after giving up an important assignment as special DGP in the CRPF, reasoned one officer. Singh has several things going for him, including his excellent track record, and DGP Vikram Singh has completed his tenure of two years. But since Vikram Singh enjoys very good relations with the people who matter, the government would first accommodate him suitably and then appoint Karamvir Singh in his place, said the officer.
BSP flip-flop
Entry of public was stopped in Ambedkar Memorial and certain other memorials on September 11 after the Supreme Courts stay on construction work. On Thursday, however, the Ambedkar Memorial was opened to BSP workers who had arrived in the city to attend the foundation programme of Kanshiram Green (Eco) Garden. Vehicles carrying BSP flags were seen inside the Bhimrao Ambedkar Vihar on the Gomti embankment where entry of vehicles is usually restricted. During the programme,Housing Minister Naseemuddin Siddiqui even made an announcement that people could visit the Ambedkar Memorial as it had been opened. Asked about it,Mukesh Kumar Mesharam,member-secretary of the Sthals and Institutions Management,Protection and Maintenance Committee, said the memorials had never been closed for public because the stay was on the entry of labourers and contractors only. But the very next day, restrictions on public entry were imposed again.
Too busy politicking
The K D Singh Babu Stadium, which has hosted national and international cricket matches in the past, has been found unsuitable for the Uttar Pradesh versus Delhi Ranji Trophy match which is to be held between November 22 and 25. The BCCI pitch committee member (central zone),Kishore Pradhan, who visited Lucknow last week, found wild grass growing all over the outfield. The match will, therefore,be held at Dr Akhilesh Das Stadium, which is inside Babu Banarsi Das Institute and is quite far from the main city. Given the fact that the Babu stadium is located right under the nose of the UP Sports Directorate and the Regional Sports Office, sources blame its plight on officers who are always busy politicking to promote their own interests. Ironically, the stadium where the match will now be held has been built by a politician. Dr Akhilesh Das,the man after whom it is named,is none other than BSP general secretary and former mayor whose family runs the Babu Banarsi Das Institute.
