Politicians praise the independence of the Election Commission,but dislike it when the commission does something that does not suit them. After the commission removed Principal Secretary (Home) Kunwar Fateh Bahadur,Mayawati appointed him as her principal secretary in-charge of home affairs. So,even when he is out of the Home Department,Bahadur can call any file from the department.
It shows the respect Mayawati has for the commissions right to make its independent judgment. When Election Commissioner S Y Quraishi visited Lucknow last week,leaders of political parties told him how the CM had cocked a snook at the commission. But the EC can do little: it can only order removal of officers involved in election related work,not those in the CMO.
At his meeting with senior officers,however,Quraishi cautioned that if the axe of the EC fell on them,it would haunt their career for long. An officer said Kunwar Fateh Badahur,who now stands exposed as pro-BSP,may face problems when he opts for the Central deputation. But why would he like to go there,unless Mayawati becomes the PM? In that case,he will have a much bigger responsibility and clout.

Predicament predicted for CM
The predictions of an astrologer,close to officials in the chief ministers secretariat,are the hot topic of discussion among the babus. He has calculated that BSPs Lok Sabha tally would not exceed 30. In fact,it may even be lower,he has reportedly said. Using the astrology jargon,he has explained how the time is adverse because of the presence of criminals among BSP candidates. Sources said the prediction is yet to reach Mayawati. It is said the same astrologer had,in the 2002 elections,predicted the rout of the BJP and formation of the BSP-BJP coalition in the state.

Amar rubs Lalu salt on Cong wounds
The Congress must be repenting the time when it used to praise Lalu Prasad Yadav as its most trusted ally. When the Samajwadi Party was bargaining with the Congress for seats in UP,Congress general secretary Digvijay Singh used to tell SP men,Laluji se sikihiye wafadari kya hai,Amar Singh revealed recently.
The disclosure came when,at a press conference,Singh was asked to comment on Lalu Yadavs statement in which he had blamed the Congress for the demolition of the Babri Masjid. Amar Singh remarked,Laluji is our leader. We have now accepted the suggestion of Digvijay Singh and support Lalujis statement.

Netaji trips over Nafisas saundarya
Nafisa Ali may be a celebrity,but Mulayam Singh has difficulty remembering her name. At a public meeting he addressed in support of Sushila Saroj,SP candidate for Mohanlalganj,Mulayam started with an introduction of party leaders present in the gathering. He named Sushila,identified Madhu Gupta and Bhagawati Singh,then turned towards Nafisa Ali,and fumbled for words. Sensing the embarrassment,Saroj whispered Nafisas name into Mulayams ears. After a while,while narrating the contributions of party leaders to the welfare of society,Mulayam again forgot Alis name. Again Saroj,and this time Nafisa herself,had to help Mulayam. And what,according to Mulayam Singh,was Nafisa Alis contribution to society. Nafisaji ne apne samay mein apne saundarya ko sabit kiya hai (Nafisa had proved the significance of beauty in her times) said Netaji.

Singh vs Khan,battle to watch
The ongoing spat between the two general secretaries of the Samajwadi party the Pathan of Rampur,Azam Khan,and Amar Singh is taking funny turns. Amar Singh wants to accompany Jayaprada,SP candidate from Rampur,when she goes to file her nomination papers on Monday,but is concerned for his security. The Centre has given him Z-plus security,but the UP government has withdrawn it. He spoke to Superintendent of Police of Rampur for ensuring his security on April 20,but the police officer advised him to exercise his discretion. There are whispers that the district administration does not want to annoy Khan with whom they have to deal daily.
