Maya keeps shoe distance
Mayawati is known for keeping her distance from the media. The day after a Sikh journalist hurled a shoe at Union Home Minister P C Chidambaram in Delhi, this distance increased.
At her press conference in Lucknow, the distance between the journalists and dais widened from the usual 10 feet to about 25 feet. Obviously, somebody thought that no journalist could hurl a shoe that far.
Long live Socialism
The Samajwadi Party has drawn much flak for its hair-brained ideas littered in its manifesto. It wants to abolish English medium schools, discourage mechanisation of agriculture, phase out computers and shut down malls. Reminds one of King Canute who commanded the waves to roll back into the sea.
Reminds one also of double standards. The socialists send their offsprings to the best schools and colleges, even outside the country, but want English schools to be shut for others.
Where did Akhilesh Yadav, the budding star of the SP,study? We all know.
But what many do not know is where Amar Singhs children study.
The SP general secretarys two daughters are enrolled in Delhis Vasant Valley School where, according to the school website, the quarterly tuition fee up to V Class is Rs 17,200,and other annual expenses Rs 12,000.
For standards V to X,the quarterly fee is Rs 20,000,and Rs 13,000 other annual charges.
Watch out for Singh vs Pathan
All those in the Samajwadi Party, who had been rubbed on the wrong side by Amar Singh in the past, are now watching the war of words between him and the Pathan of Rampur,Azam Khan with great interest.
Khan has already achieved what no other leader of the SP could. In the past, all those who dared to speak against Singh were either shown the door or had to leave the party. Beni Prasad Verma,Raj Babbar and Shahid Siddiqui all went out unsung. Singhs detractors are now rallying around Azam Khan.
The Pathans assertion that he would never leave the party, but will continue his fight has given them a new hope. A leader claimed Netaji knows the grievances of the silent majority, who hate the rapid corporatisation of the party. He said Netaji will certainly intervene after the Lok Sabha polls and settle the issue once for all. Until then, keep your fingers crossed.
Photo-op in jadu ki jhappi
Before the Supreme Court shot down Sanjay Dutts dream of becoming an MP,he was a frequent visitor to the Samajwadi Party office. Party members would shake his hands,or give him a jadu ki jhappi. A photographer in Lalbagh was smart enough to spot a business opportunity. Every time the actor visited the SP office,he would click all those handshakes and hugs. Somebody spread the word that anyone who wanted his photograph with Dutt just had to contact this photographer.
Since then, the shutterbugs business is booming. He shot whosoever he could and is selling photos at four times the usual price.
From Azamgarh to IPL
Here is an IPL discovery you may not have heard of. Kamran Khan,an 18-year-old pacer from Azamgarh, has made it to the Rajasthan Royals, the defending champions. He has never played first-class cricket, but was selected from a Mumbai Twenty20 tourney. The Royals captain-coach Shane Warne is full of praise for this raw talent.
