The Lucknow Municipal Corporation (LMC) has written to the state government for a grant of Rs 22 crore to begin work on the citys slaughterhouse project.
Facing shortage of funds, the project could not take off in the last financial year. We had asked the state government in March to allocate us money under the revolving fund. But as funds were saturated for the 2008-09 financial year,we could not be allotted the required money, said Additional Municipal Commissioner A C Sinha.
Last week,we again wrote to the state government to allocate us the required funds under any head from the 2009-2010 budget, he added. Sinha said that work on the approach road for the slaughterhouse has already been started.
Proposed under JNNURM,the project is worth Rs 52 crore. With the Centres share being Rs 15 crore,LMC is supposed to pay Rs 22 crore. The construction agency will pay Rs 15 crore.
At present, three slaughter houses are operational in the city Aishbagh (Motijheel),Kasaibada (Ganesh Ganj) and Chikmandi (Maulviganj) area. Functional since the British period, these do not conform to the required standards.
A slaughterhouse is proposed to be built in the Salempur Pithora area on the Lucknow-Hardoi Road in an 8-acre stretch. The house will be meant for both small and large animals. Completely air-conditioned,special veterinary officials will be posted at the centre to ensure that the animals are provided proper healthcare before they are slaughtered. It will also have a carcass utilisation plant for the disposal of dead animals.
