Although BJP national president Nitin Gadkari has ruled out any pre-poll alliance in UP,the Janata Dal(U) has claimed the statement was not applicable to it as the party was an NDA partner and also a BJP ally in the neighbouring Bihar.

Stating this on Friday, state JD(U) president Suresh Niranjan said his party has given the BJP a list of 55 seats on which it could field its candidates. These seats are in eastern UP,western UP and Bundelkhand,he said.

At a press conference in Lucknow on Sunday,Gadkari had stated the BJP will contest the UP elections on its own.

Asked about Gadkari’s statement,Niranjan said,“Gadkariji is a very senior leader and I would not comment on his statement. But I can say that JD(U) and BJP are old allies and both will contest the next Assembly polls in alliance.”

Meanwhile, state BJP president Surya Pratap Shahi said whatever the national president had stated was valid. He said he had not received any list or proposal on seat-sharing from the state JD(U). However,Niranjan said both the parties would discuss seat-sharing after completion of the BJP’s Jan Swabhiman yatras.

The election campaign committee chairman of JD(U),Pradeep Srivastava, said the party will start its election campaign in UP from Allahabad on Saturday. On November 13,the party’s national president Sharad Yadav would address workers from Kanpur,Jhansi and Chitrakoot divisions.

Srivastava said good governance and development would be the party’s agenda for the Assembly elections.
