Even as a judicial inquiry by Faizabad Chief Judicial Magistrate and a probe by Secretary (Home) and an ADG are being conducted into the death of alleged HuJI operative Khalid Mujahid,Lucknow Jail Superintendent has shot off a letter to Lucknow Chief Medical Officer about alleged negligence of the jail’s doctor in attending to Khalid’s complaint of chest pain on May 18 morning when he left to attend a court hearing in Faizabad. Khalid died while returning to jail from Faizabad that evening.

Superintendent Dadhiram Maurya has sent copies of his letter to the government and ADG,Prison Headquarters.

Maurya said,“I have written a letter to CMO complaining about the functioning of the doctors deputed in the jail. The doctors do not attend the inmates properly and the jail staff cannot be held responsible for the negligence on their part.” He said that he has referred to Khalid’s case as an example of negligence by the doctor.

According to the letter, jail’s medical officer Dr Pradeep Bijlani mentioned in the records that he had conducted a check-up of Khalid around 9.30 am after the latter complained of chest pain on May 18. Bijlani diagnosed pain on the left side of chest and prescribed ‘sorbitrate’ tablet. The doctor did not mention if he had provided the tablet to Khalid.

While on his way to Lucknow jail from Faizabad,Khalid again complained of severe pain in the chest and was declared dead when taken to the district hospital at Barabanki. The postmortem examination of Khalid did not ascertain the cause of death and the panel of doctors who conducted the autopsy preserved the viscera, heart and lungs for test. On Wednesday,Barabanki SP Syed Wasim Ahmad said that the report from the lab is awaited.
