Lokayukta N K Mehrotra, who had recommended the prosecution of former BSP minister Babu Singh Kushwaha in two cases of alleged corruption, has said that the induction of the former ministers family members in ruling Samajwadi Party (SP) may affect the ongoing inquiry on these cases.
Mehrotra said, however,he has not informed the state government about his apprehension. I have not told anything to the government. But it is an obvious apprehension that these inquiries can get affected. When the accused persons who are not part of government manage to exert pressure (on investigating agencies),then the people who are part of government, off course, become much more capable of doing so, he added.
Mehrotra has indicted Kushwaha twice for alleged corruption. Kushwaha was held guilty of illegally awarding mining contracts of stone, red gravel and sand in Mahoba and Banda district as mines minister in Mayawati government and laundering money through his various registered societies. The Lokayukta had sent his report to then chief minister Mayawati in January 2012,and the latter had ordered an inquiry by Vigilance Establishment the next month.
Recently in May,2013,Lokayukta indicted Kushwaha, along with his former ministerial colleague Naseemuddin Siddiqui and other government officials,in connection with the alleged corruption in the supply of sandstone for construction of various memorials and parks. Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav recently handed over the inquiry of the matter to state governments Vigilance Establishment.
While Kushwaha is still in jail in connection with the NRHM scam, his wife Shiv Kanya and his brother Shiv Saran joined the SP on Saturday.
