The number of applications received from the jobless people of the state to avail the Samajwadi Party governments unemployment allowance scheme has been maximum in eastern Uttar Pradesh, known for its poverty, and which also happens to be the stronghold of the ruling party.
In contrast, the western part of the state has received fewer applications fewer than even the VIP districts that are stronghold of heavyweight politicians. For example Kannauj,Etwah and Mainpuri of Mulayam Singh Yadav famil,y and the Gandhi bastion of Rae Bareli and Amethi.
According to Employment and Training Directorate, over five lakh applications have been submitted at various employment exchange offices in all the 75 districts in past five months. The maximum of 37,031 applications have been received in Ambedkar Nagar, followed by 23,834 in Allahabad,17,365 in Jaunpur,17,121in Chandauli,16,799 in Azamgarh,15,196 in Faizabad,15,341 in Ghazipur, 14,729 in Sultanpur,13,522 in Ballia, and 11,897 in Mau all in the eastern part of UP.
The parched Bundelkhand region too has higher unemployment figure as Banda has received 7,824 applications, followed by Hamirpur (6,911),Chitrakoot (5,589),Mahoba (5,238 ),Lalitpur (4,054) and Jalaun (nearly 3,000).
Officials said the figures reflect the regional imbalance in the state as the western part of the state close to the National Capital Region (NCR) received very less number of applications. For example Ghaziabad received only 110 applications and Gautam Buddha Nagar that houses many IT companies received 204 applications. Even Hapur and Baghpat received fewer applications with 277 and 871 respectively. Districts like Aligarh,Meerut,Mathura,Muzzaffarnagar and Agra all in the west received applications less than 4,000. While Aligarh received 1,746 applications,Meerut received 2,571,Mathura 2,571,Muzaffarnagar 3,114 and Agra 3,350 applications.
An Employment Directorate official said the registration of unemployed youths has also increased since the state government launched the scheme by handing over the cheques to the beneficiaries.
State Career Counsellor D K Verma said the reason behind the regional vagaries has been the imbalance in the economic status of the people and population growth. Population as well as poverty are high in eastern UP as compared to other regions like western UP and NCR where industrialisation and private investment have created more job opportunities, Verma said.
