The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) will be focusing on the issues related to the weavers in their constituency-based manifesto for Varanasi. The AAP has, by and large, found support among this community, even as it is constantly trying to woo other sections also.

The party is also promising to take up cleaning of River Ganga as top priority, while seeking ‘sarv dharm pavitra nagri’ (holy city for all religions) status for Varanasi, besides working towards getting a World Heritage status. It will also demand special economic packages for Varanasi from the Centre and the State.
According to a statement issued by AAP, Monday, the ‘Varanasi sankalp patra’ — the term given for the constituency-based manifesto —-is being planned on the basis of the feedback received from the residents of both the city and the rural areas.

“The official document is yet to be released. But these are the basic issues, we want to work on. These issues are also being discussed in our publication AAP ki Kranti,” said AAP spokesperson, Prerna Prasad.

Asked whether the maximum focus was on weavers, Prasad said that AAP was working on three issues in Varanasi — weavers, river and sewer.

Out of the 16-point agenda, the point on weavers deals in a great detail. The initiatives for weavers, which the AAP would undertake if successful, are: setting up of a yarn plant and a finishing plant in Varanasi, fixing minimum wages for weavers, ensuring proper supply of raw material and power (for the looms), and removing the middlemen from the trade cycle.

The party also plans to educate people to set up sewer treatment plants to prevent sewage from being dumped in River Ganga.

Meanwhile, AAP nominee Arvind Kejriwal paid visit to Ustad Bismillah Khan’s grave Monday and met his family members too later.
