An 18-year-old was allegedly beaten to death during a row over a cricket match in Sultanpur district on Saturday.

Ajit Kumar was playing on the grounds of Katghara Mutarwahi primary school when an altercation began among the boys. One of them hit Ajit on the head with a bat,Kadipur SHO AK Mishra said. Ajit was reportedly declared brought dead at the hospital.

Ajit’s father Rampher lodged an FIR against four boys – Diwakar Pandey,Neelesh Kumar,Ramnayan Tiwari and Balwant Singh. The police said the four were present on the spot. No one has been arrested.

“During the game,Ajit exchanged heated works with Neelesh. But it is yet to be confirmed who dealt the fatal blow. The cause of death will be confirmed in the post-mortem report that I have not seen yet,” said Sultanpur SP Govind Agarwal.

2 die of cold,toll reaches 132

Two more persons have died of cold,taking the toll in Uttar Pradesh this winter to 132,officials said here on Sunday. One death each was reported from Hardoi and Deoria in the past 24 hours. The Met department said the rise in temperature had given people some respite. Agra,with a minimum of 5 degrees Celsius,was the coldest place in the state.

Gang of proxy examinees busted

The Special Task Force of the Uttar Pradesh police busted a gang involved in writing exams by proxy in Kanpur on Sunday. Seven persons,including two ‘writers’,were arrested while they were appearing for State Bank of India clerk recruitment written test today. On a tip-off,the STF arrested Mahendra Singh,Shyam Prakash,Subhash Verma,Bhupendra Verma and Vikas Sachan at one examination centre. Mahendra tipped the police about three fake candidates who were to appear in the exam today. Accordingly,the STF arrested Navin Bajpai and Mukesh from Kanpur Vidya Mandir Mahila Inter College in Kanpur,where they were appearing for the exam in place of Abhishek Pandey and Akash Talwar,respectively. The third writer did not turn up. STF official said Bhupendra and Subhash ran a coaching institute for IIT aspirants and were involved in similar practices for medical,IIT and IIM entrance examinations. On selection,the applicants were to pay Mahendra Singh and Shyam Prakash Rs 5.25 lakh each.
