Former India wicketkeeper Syed Saba Karim believes in looking forward. Though he feels that he had much cricket left in him had his right eye not got hurt while keeping to Anil Kumble during the Asia Cup at Dhaka in 2000,he is thoroughly enjoying his second innings of a commentator.
Saba was in the state capital on Wednesday in connection with a cricket clinic organised by Ten Sports at the KD Singh Babu Stadium to promote the ongoing India-Sri Lanka Test Series and to popularise cricket among youngsters. In a candid chat ,Saba, who had a challenging career, said,I am enjoying my role of a commentator now. I feel blessed to follow a profession which happens to be my vocation and of many other cricketers.
He said that he had no regrets for not getting enough chance getting just 1 Test and 34 ODIs,to portray his skill in the game. Ours were a different time. Now,the approach (of the selectors) has changed. The youngsters enjoy better trust than before. In our times making it to the Indian team at a very young age was rare and players were given just one or two matches to prove their worth. These days,it is nice to see players doing well in the domestic circle and being rewarded in the form of a place in the Indian team at a young age. While imparting tips to the youngsters, the 42-year-old said that it was very important for the budding cricketers to have their basics and technique right.
On the India vs Sri Lanka Test,Saba said the team is struggling and hoped that it is able to save the match. For retaining the top ranking, the team has to work hard and there has to be a consistency in perform-ance.Saba said it was early to comment on Rainas captaincy during the Indias tour to Zimbabwe in May-June. He had gone there with a very young team. However,I feel that Raina should have come higher in the batting order at Zimbabwe. There has been a great improvement in the character and technique of Raina as a player which is good for the team, he said.
