Although Samajwadi Party lost the 2007 Assembly election mainly because of its partronage to criminal elements,the party it seems has not learnt its lesson and this time too has selected many candiates with criminal antecedents.
Among the 394 candidates whose names have been finalised are history-sheeters like Bhagwan Sharma alias Guddu Pandit,Abhay Singh and Vijay Mishra and Mitrasen Yadav,who has been convicted in a case of embezzlement and cheating.
Abhay Singh and Mishra are currently lodged in jail.
Bhagwan Sharma alias Guddu Pandit,who has been fielded by the party from Anupshahar constituency of Bulandshahar,is the main accused in the case of abduction of 14 members of Jahangirabad Block Development Committee to ensure victory of his candidate in the chairmans election.
Abhay Singh,lodged in Faizabad jail,has 32 cases pending against him in Lucknow,Faizabad as well as Gonda district. The charges are serious like murder,illegal detention,attempt to murder and rioting. He is the SP nominee for Gosaiganj constituency of Faizabad.
Mitrasen Yadav,who was convicted and sentenced to seven years imprisonment by a Faizabad court earlier this month in a case of embezzlement and cheating,has been fielded by the party from Bikapur. His father Anand Sen,a former minister in the Mayawati government,has been convicted in a murder case and is also behind bars.
Vijay Mishra,the candidate from Gyanpur constituency of Sant Ravidas Nagar,is lodged in Meerut jail. He is the prime accused in the case of bomb blast outside the residence of Homoeopathy Minister Nand Gopal Gupta in Allahabad on July 12 last year in which The Indian Express Senior Reporter Vijay Pratap Singh was mortally wounded.
Mishra,who carried an award of Rs 2.5 lakh on his head,was nabbed by Delhi Police and UP Special Task Force in February in Delhi.
Ramvir Singh Yadav,who had attacked Ferozabad SP Amitabh Thakur in 2006 over the transfer of a police station in-charge,has been fielded from Jasrana constituency of Ferozabad.
Where the party could not field the people with shady past,it has named their family members and relatives. Since Amar Mani Tripathi is serving a life sentence for the murder of Madhumita Shukla,the party has fielded his son Aman Mani Tripathi from Nautanwa and uncle Shyam Narayan Tiwari from Farenda.
Similarly,since Usman Ul Haq,the MLA from Moradabad is serving life sentence for murder,his uncle and former MLA Shamimul Haq has been fielded from his constituency.
Anup Gupta,son of Om Prakash Gupta,who is a history-sheeter and currently in jail in connection with the foodgrain scam,has been given ticket from Mahauli in Sitapur. From Lucknow East,the SP has fielded Juhi Singh,daughter of former chief secretary Akhand Pratap Singh,who was arrested by the CBI in a case of disproportionate assets and named one of the most corrupt IAS officers by an organisation of IAS officers.
Party spokesman Rajendra Chaudhary defended the party decisions,saying,None of those given ticket has been convicted. Police opens history-sheet of people who are politically targeted. He also said that relatives of criminals cannot be called criminals.
