Governor B L Joshi gave his assent to the UP Lokayukta and Deputy Lokayukta (amendment) Bill 2012 extending the term of Lokayukta from six to eight years. The Bill was recently passed by the Assembly.
The six-year term of UP Lokayukta N K Mehrotra ended on March 15. But soon after the formation of the Samajwadi Party government,Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav decided to extend the tenure of Lokayukta by two years in the first Cabinet meeting on March 15.
Thereafter,the government had sent an ordinance extending the tenure of Lokayukta to the Governor,who gave it his assent on March 22.
Later,the UP Lokayukta and Deputy Lokayukta (amendment) Bill 2012 was placed in the recently concluded session of the Assembly. The bill was returned by the Legislative Council,which had recommended a five-year term for Lokayukta.
However,the Assembly rejected the recommendations of the council and the Bill was passed by the Assembly as it is and was sent to the Governor for approval.
