The Uttar Pradesh Police gunned down wanted gangster Saleem in an encounter on Saturday evening while trying to escape from a police check-point near Gautam Budh Nagar.
The police said the incident took place at around 4.30 pm when they intercepted the car in which he was travelling with an aide. On being asked to produce documents for the car,they opened fire. In the retaliatory fire,however,one of the occupants was killed while the other escaped. Later,the deceased was identified as Saleem,a resident of Bahriach.
An AK 47 rifle,a .32 bore revolver and cartridges were recovered from the car.
Police said 14 cases were registered against Saleem,one even in Mumbai,and carried a reward of Rs 50,000. The cases against him are lodged in Bahraich,Lucknow,Kanpur,Meerut and Basti.
Police said Saleem was travelling in a stolen WagonR car owned by one Vivek Verma in Nehru Vihar area of Ghaziabad.
Police said Saleem escaped from custody in September 2007 by jumping from the running Kashi Vishwanath Express train.
Saleem pushed the constables escorting him and jumped off the train. He was being brought to Meerut after making appearance before the Varanasi court, said Ashok Kumar Singh,SSP,Gautam Budh Nagar.
Additional Superintendent of Police,Law and Order,Brij Lal said,in 2007 Saleem was accused of killing three persons. The body of two persons was recovered in Karkhonda area of Meerut,while the body of third person was recovered at Hafizpur area of Ghaziabad
