A fruit stall was torched, allegedly by a local Samajwadi Party leader and his men,in Hazratganj area of the city early today.
In a complaint to the police, stall owner Vaishnav Kumar Kori blamed Atul Yadav alias Bantu, but the police have not lodged an FIR. Hazratganj police station In-Charge Vijay Prakash said that the matter was being investigated to ascertain the cause of the fire.
Kori, who also claims to be a SP worker, alleged that Yadav did not like it when he tried to garland local SP MLA Ravidas Mehrotra during his visit to the locality on the occasion of Ram Navmi yesterday. Yadav abused Kori, beat him up and later burnt his stall in Narhi locality,Kori alleged. Yadav, however, denied the allegation, saying that Kori himself had burnt his stall to avoid paying for the fruits he had bought on credit during Navratri.
Yadav said that he had called Mehrotra for participating in Ram Navmi celebrations in the locality and when Kori and his supporters tried to garland him,Mehrotra turned them away.
