Four held for using ‘drone cameras’ at Varanasi ghat

Four persons were arrested in Varanasi for allegedly shooting the Ganga Arti at Dashashwamedha Ghat using a “drone camera”.

The police said the accused were working for a travel channel and were shooting footage for documentary purposes. However, they had neither informed the police station nor sought permission from any authorities.

According to the police, the incident came to light when personnel from the local intelligence unit spotted the “drone camera” at Ganga Arti around 7 pm Thursday.

The local police was subsequently informed. A police team arrived at the spot and detained four persons.

They also seized the said camera, besides some equipment like walkie-talkies. The intelligence agencies interrogated the accused following which they were formally put under arrest.

They have been identified as Sandeep, Vipul, Teerthankar and Satish, all in their 30s. While Sandeep and Vipul belong to Chandigarh, the other two were from Delhi, the police said.

“An FIR under various sections including 188 (disobeying a duly promulgated government order) and 287 (negligent conduct with machinery) of the IPC has been registered against them. They were produced before the court, which sent them to jail,” said Station Officer (Dashashwamedha), V K Singh Yadav.

Preliminary interrogation of the accused revealed that they had been working for a travel  channel and were making a documentary.
